There are many situations in which home
care is appropriate to assist an individual or family:
- When there are functional limitations from a short-term
problem, like an injury, or a chronic illness like emphysema
- When there is memory loss due to Alzheimer’s Disease
or another dementing illness and the person needs supervision
and care to assure safety and well being
- When the caregiver needs assistance with some of the more physically
challenging aspects of care such as bathing and incontinence
care
- When the family caregiver is often at risk of burnout or illness
from the stress of caregiving. Home care is aimed at preserving
the strength of the primary caregiver, as well as seeing to
the many needs of the care recipient
- When respite care, or short-term relief is needed to enable
the spouse or other family caregiver to continue providing care.
Respite care can be for a vacation, an important family event
or some other short-term reason
- When private duty home care makes the difference between staying
home and moving to a facility
